The Medscape Physician Compensation Report for 2017 is out and has several interesting insights.
The top three earners among all physicians this year are Orthopedists ($489,000), Plastic Surgeons ($440,000), and Cardiologists ($410,000).
The largest increase in earnings was from Plastic Surgery (+24%) and Allergy & Immunology (+16%).
Self-employed specialists made 28% more than their employed counterparts, but self-employed primary care physicians only made 4% more than their employed counterparts.
A greater percentage of Emergency Medicine physicians and Dermatologists feel fairly compensated than other specialties. Endocrinologists and Nephrologists were least likely to feel fairly compensated. Overall, 54% of the respondents feel fairly compensated.
According to this year’s Medscape Lifestyle Report, bureaucratic tasks remain the number one reason for burnout, with 57% of all physicians spending 10 hours or more per week on paperwork.
On a brighter note, 77% of all respondents indicated they would choose medicine again if given a choice, with the highest being Rheumatologists at 83%.
